Getting Involved
We are trying to build a community of researchers, students, professionals, and community members who want to informally and formally investigate issues related to homes and communities of the future. Join us!
There are many ways for people at MIT and elsewhere to participate in the House_n projects. A good place to start is to contact us with a short description of who you are, your interests, your skills, and your resume. If you would like to be on the House_n mailing list, send a note with your name, email, and affiliation to housen-web@mit.edu
Study participants and volunteers make our research possible. Help us understand how to design technology and spaces that meet the needs of everyday life. Stay in our apartment lab, wear simple sensors for a day, test an application on a cell phone, give feedback in an interview, and more... current study and volunteer opportunities.
MIT graduate and undergraduate students can participate in a variety of ways. We have projects for students at all levels and in areas spanning most departments at MIT -- from business to architecture to social anthropology to technology. We are also interested in incorporating new technologies from other labs at MIT into the PlaceLab, so if you have some work that is a good fit, contact us. We are always looking for good people but keep a list of specific openings for paid positions. You can also check the course register (and the events page) each semester for courses that are taught by House_n staff.
Wellesley and Harvard students both have cross-registration agreements with MIT, making it possible for you to take House_n courses and potentially to do research for credit. Even if you cannot cross-register, there are more informal ways for you to participate (see below). Wellesley students can obtain UROPs at MIT.
Boston-area students and professionals. If you don't attend MIT, Wellesley, or Harvard, it may be more difficult for you to take MIT classes (but it's always worth checking with your organization). There are, however, still ways that you can contribute. Occasionally House_n may sponsor lectures at MIT which are open to the public. If you feel you have some special skill that would be of interest to our researchers and students, please let us know and perhaps we can invite you in to talk with us. In short, we are trying to build a community of researchers, students, and professionals in the Boston area who want to informally and formally investigate issues related to homes and communities of the future. Join us!
Professionals everywhere. If you work at an innovative company that is not already a sponsor of House_n, the best way to get involved with the project is to help us convince your company to invest in House_n research at MIT, which opens up many doors. For details, see the sponsors page of this web site.
