This workshop is offered as an opportunity to extend the research begun in 4.109, Complete Fabrications Workshop, during IAP 2012. The goal is to realize two winning pavilion proposals developed in January. In order to accomplish this goal, students will develop their design proposals into complete, executable projects over the course of the semester.

This workshop will include ongoing material and process research, development of custom analysis and programming tools, and structural design and analysis. Throughout the research phase there will be an emphasis on productively utilizing frictions between concept, process, material, and structure to further enhance, rather than compromise, the design of the pavilion. Students will also be responsible for project planning, management, permitting/approvals, and budgeting, in order to be certain that the project is able to proceed cleanly and smoothly during the construction phase.

Grading will be pass/fail; satisfactory completion of the workshop will include preparation for fabrication of one or both design proposals. Construction will voluntarily take place the week after final reviews and exams conclude.

Each group meets Tuesday, between 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM for a weekly design meeting. Shop tutorials will be held Thursdays between 9:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Attendance of the weekly design meeting is required for each member of the group. Each group should be represented by at least two members at the weekly shop session. More than two unexcused absences will count negatively in the final grading evaluation. Enrollment is by invitation only.
