The past is in the present

Rosalyne Shieh
Marion Mahony Fellowship Exhibition

The past is in the present is a making visible of an ongoing process of collection, organized and prepared in a manner that can be shared. This research begins to piece together a story of Taiwan, kinship, migration, identity as a political act, loss, and hope. Following trails in my personal history, stories of people are foregrounded and everyday things, spaces, and atmospheres furnish support. Perhaps success can be measured in access by empathy—however fleeting—to another time or place or to the experience of an other. You are invited to come in and read, look and listen in on, and experience the artifacts collected. The duration of this exhibit will be treated as a long install, during which material may be rearranged or amended. Conversations and questions are welcome in person on Tuesdays 12-1pm, spontaneously at unscheduled times, and by appointment.
