M.Arch Student Luisel Zayas San Miguel Wins 2015 QuarraMatter Fellowship

Matter Design and Quarra Stone have announced this week that Dustin Brugmann of the University of Michigan and Luisel Zayas of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have been selected as the inaugural 2015 QuarraMatter Fellows.

Dustin Brugmann is a degree candidate for a Master of Architecture at the University of Michigan, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Prior to Michigan, Dustin graduated with a Bachelor of Art in Architecture from Miami University of Ohio and worked in Copenhagen and New York. Dustin is often found in the FABLab, where he is a Teaching Assistant and student coordinator of the CNC and Water Jet. He is fluent in dozens of additive and subtractive fabrication processes with a variety of materials. Dustin's academic and professional work represents a devotion to craft, ever mindful of the medium of the hand. He believes it is impossible to understand a material unless you have touch it, cut it, glue it, bend it, break it. In an effort to advance novel construction in architecture, his Master’s thesis is researching a hybridized method of helical wood bending produced robotically.

Luisel Zayas San Miguel, did his schooling at University of Puerto Rico, San Juan and currently pursuing a master in architecture at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. He now lives in Boston where he works on varies research projects, with includes smart casting molds and composites prototyping. He has managed to build small scale installations and recently was given an award by the Holcim Foundation, for the continuation of his research project, in double curvature surfaces optimization and casting. He is currently works at the Rapid Prototyping Lab at MIT and has also work as graphic designer at the Media Lab and a research assistant at the International Design Center at MIT. In the past has work on several architecture firms in Puerto Rico and New York, such as Information Studio and Ramirez Buxeda Arquitectos where he gain experience in multiple scales projects.The QuarraMatter Partnership\\

The mission of the QuarraMatter Partnership is to advance digital agendas in the material stone. This Industry-Academy partnership operates through an annual fellowship where researchers will engage and prototype in response to a series of established areas of potential advancement with regard to the processing of stone employing digital and computational models. The intention of this research is to build processes that improve accuracy and reduce the gap between drawing and making. Quarra Stone has vast resources dedicated to complex carving of stone, and Matter Design has an interest in engaging this resource and shoring it with computational intelligence. Both parties share an interest in this symbiotic relationship and the fellows will serve to implement, document, and aid in the production, documentation, and publication of these contributions. TheQuarraMatter Fellowship requests submissions annually and announces the call in January of each year.
