Core 2 Studio: PUBLIC BODY-BUILDING - THE CONEY ISLAND YMCA
Mariana Ibanez, Jennifer Leung, and Christoph Kumpusch
Spring 2018

Through the investigation of three bodies, the unmediated, the equipped, and the administrative, I prioritized and reinforced the program of wellness in the YMCA. As the node and focal point to the project, the grotto serves the unmediated body in its many forms. The unmediated bodies this zone caters to are: the runner, the swimmer, the yogi, and the rock climber. The structural rock columns house two programs: rock-climbing as circulation on the exterior and solitary yoga spaces on the interior. The track acts as another circulatory device throughout this zone, intersecting both the equipped and wellness zones. The grand stair situates itself in the wellness area as well, granting access to the more private programs of the project (lap pools teen generational spaces, workout equipment, etc.).
