initial thoughts of mount auburn cemetery. mount auburn was initially shocking to me. discovering all of mount auburn, I think, will be completely impossible. finding a focal point may even be difficult judging by how vast the place really is. my first visit here was for simple recreation. an idea from a friend who wanted to discover something new in this place we had never been to. there were so many different scales of things to focus on. a giant tower located in the middle of the cemetery, a gothic church that left me with a mysterious feeling because it was so dynamic from the outside, but was closed so I couldn't explore the inside. it stands boldly in the cemetery with its gothic spires indicating its presence amidst the trees and elaborate headstones that surround it. many of the headstones stand tall, but many just sit idle, waiting to be discovered. very close to the tower is a giant ravine, with a pond at its base that we literally had to hike down to. the discovery of all these places within the gates creates an oppurtunity to reactivate the space. most of these places are thought to be inactive, but this discovery almost gives it new life. death seems irrelevant. finding a way to activate this space within the photography is becoming the overall theme of this project. consciousness of change outside studio.
the full tombs are remarkable. embedded into the earth, they almost feel magnetic. i am pulled to almost each one, just to get a glance of what is inside. how elaborate each one is. the architecture of each individual one. i find myself trying to find more elements that have been untouched. behind stone doors that look to be inoperable. the sense of time initiated by these untouched elements is almost surreal. they tell more about those who rest within them than the surrounding tombstones. understanding how long each of these vacant spaces have been around is incredibly simple when gazing through the marble doorways and waiting for your eyes to adjust to the darkness.

one of the most amazing sunsets after the storm that passed through earlier in the day. running to get my camera from studio, i remebered my initial vision of the light with the dome standing in front of it, creating a dark silhouett from the fourth floor lobby. (image) the light was an electric pink boardered by light blue transitions that turned purple as they began to fade into the sky. the transition of colors changes after i make it back to the spot to become what my camera recorded. a new orange with wisps of yellow and highlights that fade into the fading sky. it makes me want to catalogue the time of day based on the changing colors of clouds, allowing me look up and say "its half past six judging by the pink of that cloud" . nice dream.

storm light >
earlier in the day, the storm created a treen atmosphere around all of the buildings near Sidney and Pacific Street (my home). the color of the sky filled the voids between the buildings almost deafening all the colors of the brick and aluminum detailing that composes most of the buildings in that area. buildings become subject to the light and all its intentions are suppressed by the light. not in a negative way. the light changes to an insect like green color to a rare pink, upset, and fear filled. its almost overwhelming as the rain begins again. all fromt he window of my room. i think its amazing just to wonder what my skin will look like if i venture outside into that light.
first photo trip to mount auburn >
light (week 2) i took this chance to futher explore the ravine, also known as the "frog pond". amazing the change in scale that happens (image). showing how small the head stones become as you hike up to the top of the tower. the presence of the tower is also extemely unique, as it suddenly appears through the trees, not quite clear of its own scale. i decided to take a picture of the US geologiccal seal on top of the tower to relate back to the vastness of the site. the view of boston is particular and unique. it is so dynamic that you can watch the weather change over boston as it heads towards mount auburn (image).
