Subjects
Within MIT's five Schools, there are 23 departments, each denoted by a name and a number. For example, Materials Science is referred to as "Course 3"; Urban Studies and Planning, also known as DUSP, is "Course 11"; Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is "Course 6", and so on.
The Department of Architecture is "Course 4". (The list

The method of assigning numbers to classes is to write the course number in Arabic numerals followed by a period and three digits, which are used to differentiate courses. Most classes retain the same number from year to year. Architecture groups its numbers by discipline group:
4.1xx: Architecture Design
4.2xx: Architecture Studies
4.3xx: Visual Arts
4.4xx: Building Technology
4.5xx: Computation
4.6xx: History, Theory + Criticism of Architecture and Art
