Shape decomposition is a needed stage within a designer’s process for product production across scale from medical devices to cars, furniture, houses and boats. Shape decomposition within a CAD environment is a major challenge for designers of products greater than a meter square. There are many factors from materials processing to structuring and appearance that contribute to shape decomposition decisions. The motivation behind this study is discovery of the visual, physical tactile and emotional system of decision making that could help designers prototype their ideas. In this study we explore decomposition using 3D printed artifacts to illustrate and motivate design ideas and actions. We expect to extract qualitative choices from the study presented graphically as rules.
