Computer Resources Office
The department offers a variety of computing facilities to Architecture students and faculty though the Computer Resources Office (CRO). The CRO also provides assistance in accessing computer-related resources available outside the Architecture department, from MIT's Information Services and Technology (IS&T) and and other organizations.
Windows, Macintosh and Linux Athena workstations are available throughout the design studios and other work spaces and accessible 24 hours/day. Wireless access to MITnet is provided for all users across campus by IS&T, allowing convenient network access for laptops and mobile devices. Wired network drops are available in the studios and other spaces where students can connect desktop computers. All MIT students receive a network account that enables access to state-of-the-art software, as well as e-mail, personal file storage (including web pages) and general Internet access. Available peripherals include:
- Wide-format plotters
- Laser printers (color and black-and-white)
- Scanners (flatbed, wide-format and a slide scanner)
- Slide film recorder
- CD and DVD burners
- Laser cutters
Available software includes widely-used graphics applications for 2D and 3D modeling, rendering, animation, video editing, web design, desktop publishing and structural, lighting and heat-flow analysis. Many of these software packages are provided for installation on student-owned computers without charge. MIT also provides all students with software for secure file access and transfer, virus protection and network backup services.
The CRO also supports the Electronic Classroom in room 9-251 and the Advanced Visualization Theater (AVT), room 7-431, shared with the Department of Urban Studies and Planning. The AVT is equipped with video, DVD, and computer projection facilities for classes and lectures. Several studios and public spaces have widescreen LCD or plasma displays where students can connect their own computers to present work.
For access to these hardware and software facilities as well as getting help on their use, see CRO home page or e-mail the Computer Resources Office staff.
