WHO
Nick Gelpi is a lecturer in the department of architecture at the MIT School of Architecture and Planning, and principal of his own design office based in New York. Gelpi's practice has been producing a diversity of projects from experimental structures and pavilions, to commercial retail design, and high-concept furniture and prototypes. Gelpi's research is concerned with materials and representation, often incorporating procedures of fabrication and the conventions of testing through Mockups.
WHY
Prior to beginning teaching at MIT in 2009, Gelpi was the Howard E. Lefevre Emerging Practitioner Fellow at The Ohio State University. In addition to teaching at The Ohio State, Gelpi Co-taught advanced design studios at Columbia University with Steven Holl in 2007 + 2008.
WHAT
Gelpi's work has been exhibited internationally and in 2007 he was the recipient of ARCHITECTURE Magazine's first annual R&D Award for his design work into composite wood laminate systems and a line of furniture titled the "Riddled" furniture series produced commercially by HORM.
HOW
Professionally Gelpi has worked in the New York design office of Steven Holl Architects, and nArchitects, before beginning his own practice specializing in building and construction with an interest in materials, processes and representation.
