Undergraduate Admission Information

Submission deadlines are listed online onthe Admissions Office web site. Applications are reviewed by appointed committee members from around the Institute and Admissions staff. Potential undergraduates are welcome to meet the faculty within HTC by appointment.

Graduate Admission Information

The deadline for the Graduate application and support materials is December 15 for admission the following September. Once an application has been sent to MIT, it goes through the Admissions Office and is monitored by Department of Architecture Headquearters Staff. If you need to inquire about the receipt of application items, please contact the Department at least two weeks after the deadline, 617-253-3613.

Afterwards the dossiers are sent to the HTC Admissions Committee, which includes two representatives from the gradute student body as well as faculty members. Candidates for admisison are assessed on the basis of scholarly ability and potential.

Four funded PhD candiates are accepted each year—one art history track and two architectural track placements with funding packages through MIT and the Department of Architecture. One additional architectural history track placement is with a funding package through the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture.

The number of acceptances into the SMArchS degree program can vary each year. Financial assistance is based on merit and need. Islamic studies candidates may be funded through the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture. All must be able to generate some income over the summer months when classes are not in session.

planning to visit?

To get a better sense of the academic culture at HTC and the academic interests of its faculty, it is recommended for applicants to meet with at least some of the HTC faculty, and if possible attend an HTC class. Faculty have varying schedules and travel when school is not in session, thus it is best to contact us at least two weeks prior to an intended visit.
