Fellowships Requiring Nomination

Overview

In each academic year, HTC faculty review proposals for five pre-doctoral fellowships for formal nomination. Four of the six are limited to a single nomination. There is a four-phase process for each fellowship:

  1. writing sample reviewed
  2. proposal delivered
  3. faculty review proposals resulting in formal nomination
  4. nominees: prepare fellowship application

To be eligible to submit a proposal for the nomination, candidates must be full-time MIT doctoral students who:

  • have completed all degree requirements, except for the actual thesis
  • meet the granting organization's guidelines
  • have gained their advisor's approval for submitting a proposal for nomination ie the timing is in line with degree completion
  • have well developed dissertation proposals (prospectus)
  • have a reviewed writing sample (see phase 1)

1. Writing Sample Reviewed

In the first week of classes, the candidate must give the intended writing sample to their advisor for review. Thereafter, under the guidance of the advisor the student reworks the sample until the advisor determines that it is sufficiently polished enough for the proposal phase.

2. Proposal Delivery

Completed proposals are sent to HTC@MIT, room 10-303, and consist of:

  1. a five-page (max.) dissertation proposal (prospectus) with students name and fellowship(s) desired on the top of the first page
  2. two-page (max.) report giving research completed to date and a schedule for thesis completion, planned research, and applicable travel budgets
  3. an endorsement from advisor discussing the developmental stage of the dissertation and the student's degree including the date of acquiring ABD (all but dissertation) designatation.
  4. two page (max.) cv, include language proficiencies
  5. a faculty reviewed writing sample

For the following fellowships the proposal delivery deadline is the last Monday of September at 10 a.m. (this year is Sept. 29, 2008):

For the following fellowships the proposal delivery deadline is last Monday of November at 10 a.m. (November 24, 2008):

3. Faculty Review Proposals

Faculty review the proposals based upon merit and suitability to the fellowship guidelines.

4. Nominees Prepare Fellowship Application

Application materials can be picked up at the HTC office in 10-303 or found online depending on the granting organization. The student is encouraged to gain advise from at least two faculty members to fine-tune his/her application. Applicable transcripts and recommendation letters should be sought immediately and sent to HTC office at 10-303.

The student returns the application to HTC (10-303) at least four days before the application deadline. A final inventory (making sure all parts are included) and assembly (extra copies included) will be done prior to being sent to the granting organization meeting. The nomination letter will be added to the package at that time.
