Travel Fund Opportunities

The Aga Khan Program Student Travel Grant Awards

AKPIA level
Awards are restricted to graduate students in the MIT Department of Architecture doing thesis or dissertation research dealing with the Islamic world, requiring research in some part of the Islamic world, or conducting research in an archive with holdings related to the Islamic world. Award recipients may use their travel funds either during the summer or IAP. Selections are made based on research merit and integrity of the submissions. The maximum award is $2.500. Applications are invited (by email to jlar@mit.edu) in the Fall for a February deadline.

Avalon Travel Grant

department level
MIT Department of Architecture graduate degree students are eligible to apply for partial travel support to one conference per academic year, up to a maximum of $600. Graduate degree students must be in residence status and must take an active part in scholarly meeting (such as speaking or chairing a session). Support is intended for travel expenses, registration fees, and accommodations and may not be used toward meals, internet connection, telephone, or any other incidentals. Application must be submitted to Rebecca Chamberlain, Administrative Officer, a minimum of one month prior to departure. Funding is limited, so students are encouraged to apply early in the academic year.

Hyzen Pre-Dissertation Travel Scholarship

HTC level
Awards are small travel scholarships for second- and third-year doctoral MIT students who must travel to advance or to establish the feasibility of dissertation proposals. Students must apply to the director of Departmental doctoral programs (Mark Jarzombek in HTC), who will nominate candidates to the Department head for final selection. Grants are decided in early March for summer travel and January travel with a proposal deadline of 2 pm on the last Monday in March. HTC has a $5,000 pool each year to determine recipients, an average $1,500 per student.

Henry Luce Foundation Fellowship

HTC level
The Henry Luce Foundation supports HTC doctoral students working on dissertations in American art history with the following provisions: 1) the recipients must be working on American topics and must keep the faculty informed of the progress the Luce funding made possible; 2) funding is not to be used for tuition or to defray overhead expenses; and 3) the Luce foundation expects a yearly report on student progress.Grants are decided in early March for summer travel and January travel with a proposal deadline of 2 pm on the last Monday in March.

CCA-HTC Research Fellowship

HTC level
For PhD students in HTC to pursue their individual research project while being associated with the CCA's general activities. Each Fellowship season runs from January to January. The fellowship program is four months of residency total, which can be divide-- one person for four months, two people for two months each, or four for one month each. The CCA contributes 1,000 Canadian dollars per month of residency, and MIT will match that dollar amount based on the conversion rate at the time. Grants are decided in early March for summer travel and January travel with a proposal deadline of 2 pm on the last Monday in March.
