HTC THOMAS BEISCHER LECTURE
Introduction by Mark Jarzombek and a response by Erika Naginski.
Concrete has been formed in rigid molds since its invention in Ancient Rome. Very recently however, the possibility of a new architectural and structural language has emerged based on the use of flexible fabric formworks that are shaped by an internal response to the weight and pressure of wet concrete. This way of building results in works of great simplicity, economy, and beauty.
On January 27, Contract Magazine awarded MASS the 2012 Designer of the Year for the impact being made in health care and design, with contributions from alumnas Jennifer Gaugler and Karen Conway. Jennifer Graduated from the BSAD program in 2005 and Karen received her MArch in 1986.
You can see a copy of the printed edition, as well as video coverage of MASS's story online.
TRAVEL GRANT APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
The Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at MIT is now accepting applications for Student Travel Grant Awards for the Summer 2012 and IAP 2013 periods. Awards are open to all students in the MIT School of Architecture and Planning, especially graduate students preparing theses, or undergraduate students preparing an Optional Senior Thesis.
Christoph Reinhart has been appointed an associate professor with tenure in the Department of Architecture, beginning in January.
Originally trained as a physicist, Reinhart is a building scientist and architectural educator working in the field of sustainable building design and environmental modeling. He has studied both architecture and physics and has particular expertise in daylighting, passive climatization and the influence of occupant behavior on building energy use at both the individual building and neighborhood scale.
