D-Lab Schools: Building Technology Laboratory

In a partnership between the Department of Architecture and D-Lab, this course focuses on the design, analysis and application of technologies that support the construction of inexpensive, thermally comfortable and structurally sound schools in developing countries. Studies include simulation, construction and test of models, and comparison of simulation with experimental data. Strategies to be investigated in lab projects include daylighting, passive heating and cooling, improved indoor air quality via natural ventilation, appropriate material selection, and structural design. Interaction with NGOs and/or community leaders will identify needed improvements to education, ways in which building design and retrofit support educational goals and current barriers. Students may have opportunity to present their designs and/or implement retrofits during an optional IAP site visit.

There are no required texts but readings will be assigned from documents and texts available online or in MIT libraries.
