Half-Term Subject (1st)

Pamir Mountain Village Planning & Design for Disaster Mitigation

The MIT Tajikistan Mountain Village Planning & Design Workshop will explore village disaster mitigation alterna-tives with local community leaders and the NGO team at the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH). Above the Bartang Valley, rural villages located in high mountain areas are sub-ject to hazards accelerated by climate change: flooding, mudslides, avalanches, and rock falls. The MIT Summer Workshop will focus on design options for the voluntary relocation of a selected Pamir village on the ancient Silk Road. Students will integrate research, planning & design work across the scales of building, urban settlement and landscape, contributing to AKAH’s new Habitat Planning framework. This Summer Workshop is co-sponsored by AKAH and AKPIA @MIT with the aim of establishing a long-term research and design collaboration in the region.
