Special Subject: Design Studies — NOMA Student Competition: Gentrification + the City

This workshop will address a design challenge posted by NOMA (National Organization of Minority Architects) to develop a block of vacant houses in East Flatbush. The design brief calls for a building program composed of mixed-income residential development inclusive commercial, retail and community spaces. Critical question within the workshop will address issues related to forces of gentrification, the dynamics of a mixed-income community, and the local culture.

Workshop deliverables will be two presentation boards, a model and photos of the model submitted to the NOMA website. The class will meet twice a week for five weeks to discuss design schemes and coordinate final presentation materials. There will be a formal presentation by team members at the NOMA conference in NYC, October 17-20.
