Introduction to Video will cover the technical and conceptual variables and strategies inherent in video as a medium for visual art production. Structural concepts of time, space, perspective, sound, and materiality will be analyzed. The course will build on the art historical legacy specific to the moving image and video while at the same time considering the contemporary moment. Introduction to Video will also consider, self-exploration, performance, social critique, and the manipulation of raw experience into aesthetic form. Students will gain hands on knowledge of Final Cut Pro, video capturing and editing, montage, and lighting. Presentation and critique of student work will alternate with technical workshops, screenings, visiting artists, and field trips. Lab fee $110.
