This course is a workshop involving an exploration of the
live time-based form, performance, specifically in relation
to visual or perceptual concerns in sound and image. Each
student will be asked to work with a short narrative as source
material for experiments in the transformation of a concept
into visual and aural form. We will work with how various
devices can alter these translations. The Video camera and
a basic sound system will function as recording tools to capture
material to be used in live performance. We will also document
work presented in class. This will involve a focus on basic
techniques relating to the particular possibilities of video.
An important aspect of the work will be the consideration
of place and location, or set and point of view. Spatial structures
will be designed as settings for narratives. Students will
be asked to construct a prop or object to use in their individual
project. Workshops will involve exercises that introduce ideas
of movement, gesture, and disguise in place, or everyday ritual.
There will also be weekly screenings of video art and a brief
introduction to the history of performance in the Twentieth
century.
