This course provides practical instruction in basic black and white photography techniques and an introduction to the critical thinking associated with the medium. Students learn fundamentals of 35mm camera operation, film exposure and development, and darkroom printing. Readings and lectures will encourage aesthetic appreciation of the medium and a critical awareness of how images in our culture are produced and constructed. Assignments are designed to develop technical skills and provide opportunities for personal exploration. Students must provide a 35mm camera.
