Units: 0-12-9
Level: U
Prerequisites:

Theme: The characterizing of space. Establishing an authentic identity of Path and Place that is an articulation of the values and aspirations underlying the human events for which they are a setting.

Program: Places in which to Encounter / Acquire the Knowledge of Text.

Process: Study will be undertaken in four stages:

1) Creation of a Movie: A journey through three "stage sets" that serve to express through narration, imagery, procession and sound, the ideas/emotions within a particular poem. (Projects will be done in groups).

2) Analysis of Precedent: Group and individual tours and analysis of a number of notable places for books that are close at hand. Individuals will present findings in sketches and diagrams to enlighten the group about the spatial characteristics and organizational principals of these places.

3) Articulation of a Program/Story: Each student will develop for themselves, a narration about path and place, using text and imagery, that will inform the underlying character development of A Branch Library of the 21 st Century. It will be comprised of a gathering of three or more distinct settings and a corresponding character of procession. Settings might include…

A Temple of Knowledge,
A Sanctuary of Knowledge,
A Theater of Knowledge,
A Forum of Knowledge,
A Well of Knowledge,
A Network of Knowledge,
A Marketplace of Knowledge,
A Garden of Knowledge,
A Tree of Knowledge,
A Storehouse of Knowledge,
A Museum of Knowledge, and/or
A Playground of Knowledge…

The total size should be within the range of 20,000 to 30,000 sq. ft 4) A Building Design: Each student will develop a building design that is an articulation of his or her Program/Story.

The building will be sited just north of Central Square, Cambridge, MA, at the SW corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Pleasant Street; a place of transition between the civic and retail center of the neighborhood. It is a setting that allows the studio to explore and celebrate the primary condition of urbanity; the intersection of the individual with community, resources and amenities. The Design Process will be modulated through the following stages:

a) A Place of Identity: Building Concept and Organization
b) A Living Organism: Integration of Building Systems
c) The Envelope: Building from Inside and from Outside
d) Interior Spaces: Material, Light, Color and
Furnishings

The format of the Concluding Presentation will use the movie technique from the first exercise, to take the viewer/critic on a procession through the primary story of their design.

Students will explore themes primarily through the use of perspective and models.
Students will receive individual consultant support as required by the specifics of their own program and approach.

Supplemental exercises include bi weekly discussions on related themes, activities with the parallel studio, Friday afternoon show and tell, with beer(?) and chips, and guest critics that include poets, scenic artists, architectural critics and…many others.
