Investigates fundamental issues in photography and the nature of the photographic image as well as non traditional ways of exploring the photographic vision. Explores relationship of image to language as well as the issues of meaning, interpretation, and their relationship to culture. This course provides practical introduction in basic black and white photography techniques. Students learn fundamentals of 35mm camera operation, film exposure and development, and darkroom printing. One semester-long assignment is designed to develop technical skills and provide an opportunity for personal exploration. Students must provide a 35 mm camera. Lab fee.
