The subject of this class will involve one aspect of a particular
project. Although there will be specific direction, we will
work together, with performance as basic structure to develop
a final video installation (stage set with video). All aspects
of the production will be shared by the participants: camera
and other media in general developing the script, performing
the different roles, building and designing a structure, deciding
how and where to record the material, and transforming material
in relation to. We will explore ways of incorporating media
into architecture forms or fragments, use drawing as process
of representation, and develop a device in relation to point
of view.
Source material will be based on various texts relating to
"Helen in Egypt" and the idea that the Trojan War was fought
for an illusion. Helen, in Egypt instead of Troy was a phantom,
a ghost, and a device. The real cause, perhaps was a trade
war, or access to the east. The idea can be approached in
many ways in relation to the present. Personal journals will
focus on contemporary every day life in relation to historical
metaphor.
While being involved in specific references students would
be free to invent parallel works. We will consider the Brechtian
idea of the epic, which was partly based on the use of radio
and film. What would the equivalent be today?
Students will also be required to view examples of film and
video weekly and to study certain texts that pertain to the
project. [This class requires one mandatory field trip during
the semester.]
