This course will investigate complex intersections between fine art (painting, sculpture, photography, and video) and visual forms designed for mass distribution and consumption (advertising, journalism, comic books, television, fashion). Selected works of architecture will also be considered. Among the artists analyzed are Gustave Courbet, Edward Manet, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Rodchenko, Margaret White, Andy Warhol, Martha Rosler, and Cindy Sherman. Rather than a chronological survey of 19th and 20th century Western art, the course will probe specific historical, political, and theoretical problems, among which are simultaneous intersections and differences of fine art and mass culture.   The course will consist of lectures, class discussion of readings, and museum visits. In keeping with HASS-D guidelines, essay exams and analytical papers are required.
