The Boston Design Lab 1 is the first of a series of Studios that reinforce MIT's
engagement with the city and region of Boston. This first Boston Design Lab
(spring 2008) will focus on the heart of the city ? The City Hall and its
environs. It is appropriate for the Lab to focus on this issue in the context
of the Mayor's call to relocate the Boston City Hall and the discussion that
this has triggered off in questioning the relevance as well as implications of
the decision. Could the City Hall instead be renewed in-situ? Is this an
opportunity to re-weave the City Hall and the plaza back with the surrounding
historic urban fabric? Is this an opportunity for new architectural
interventions?
The Boston Design Lab will address issues that range from Urban Design and
Architecture to issues of sustainability, urban memory and preservation. The
major emphasis in the studio will be exploring the interface between
architecture and urban design. The studio will be open to students in the
MArch, SMArchS, Architecture and Urbanism programs as well as to MCP students
with a degree in Architecture.
