The subject of the class is the act of drawing in relation to performance and video, specifically the ways in which the context of performance and the medium of video transform and alter the process. The subject will be approached with various considerations, beginning with basic questions of how do we look and where and the connections between eye and hand or body, and how movement is involved in the tracing of lines on surfaces. Qualities peculiar to the mediums of video and new technologies will be explored with the underlying layers of a particular content in the work of individual participants shaping final projects.
The class will consider fragments of the writings of the poet Dante, specifically The Inferno, and how to relate such a work to the present time. We will also look at the rituals of various cultures that involve drawing.

The workshop will involve class improvisations and assignments relating to the development of a final project in video and/or performance.
