Location: 9-251

Schedule: Fridays, 1-4PM, Additional times for recitations to be determined during initial sessions

This course will study contemporary construction systems and technologies, and practical applications of geometry and digital modeling used to realize built complex forms. The course will focus primarily on structural and surface systems, and look at how digital fabrication, installation and supply chain management systems are generating the efficiencies for mass customization of real world building systems.

The course will offer a survey of digitally founded professional engineering, construction and fabrication practices through case studies, shop visits and on campus and video conference lectures. These interactions with leading building professionals will be complemented with digital modeling and prototyping techniques to achieve mass customization strategies, with a view to the features of geometric forms and their relationships to efficiencies of fabrication. Class projects will pursue modeling and making exercises, case studies, and a final project addressing digital system design, analysis, and fabrication, to develop systematic building strategies using surface and parametric modeling technologies.

A background in the use surface and parametric modeling software is required as a prerequisite.
