Faculty Rania Ghosn, Joel Lamere, and William O’Brien Jr. recognized for design work

Faculty Rania Ghosn, Joel Lamere, and William O’Brien Jr. were recognized for their design work in The Architect’s Newspaper and Architect magazine’s 2016 Design Awards.

Assistant Professor Rania Ghosn’s practice with El Hadi Jazairy, DESIGN EARTH, received an Honorable Mention for Architectural Representation for the project Pacific Aquarium, sited in the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone, Pacific Ocean. Pacific Aquarium appropriates the aquarium to highlight the alarming distance between our self-focus and Earth consciousness. Each of nine drawings present a section of the ocean that reflects resource exploitation and climate change.

The practice of Assistant Professor Joel Lamere and Cynthia Gunadi, GLD, received an Honorable Mention in The Architect’s Newspaper 2016 Best of Design Award for Young Architects. The jury recognized GLD, founded in 2010, for “architectural speculation focused on advancing contemporary building practices through exploring the promise of thinness at architectural scales, the potential of new surface geometries, and material effects tuned to human occupancy.”

GLD also received an Honorable Mention for its project, Grove, from Architect magazine’s annual R+D Awards. “Grove represents a significant advancement in architectural form-making. By combining composite-based structural analysis with inflatable vinyl forms, GLD has developed a workflow that embeds structural logic into design from the very start—and at a low cost,” writes Nate Berg.

Associate Professor William O’Brien Jr. received a Citation in Architect magazine’s 2016 Residential Architect Design Awards for his project, the Mask House. “The Mask House: A Space of Myriad Sanctuaries conceals a space of contemplation deep in the woods," writes WOJR. "It provides disguise for the true identity of a small house that rests high among the canopy of trees. The proprietor of the house long his brother in the lake that the house overlooks."

The Architect’s Newspaper Best of Design Awards jury included Erik Verboon, Claire Weisz, Karen Stonely, Christopher Leong, Adrianne Weremchuk, and Senior Editor Matt Shaw. Architect magazine’s Residential Architect Design Awards jury included Anne Decker, Lisa Iwamoto, Keving Kudo-King, and Dan Maginn. Architect magazine’s R+D Jury included Mic Patterson, Doug Stockman, and Elizabeth Whittaker.
