Project
Brooklyn YMCA | Core Studio II

Individual X Collective
Enfilade X Corridor
Singular X Serial
Poche X Occupied

This YMCA proposal uses the dichotomies above to guide its architectural expression. The organization of the project fundamentally relies on individual versus collective space to create comfortable environments for different users. This is achieved by extracting key components from collective programs and rearranging them as spaces for individual use.

Looking down across an enfilade exposes a series of collective spaces, which offers visual accessibility and creates an open dynamic environment, whereas off-axis poche spaces offer private individual rooms. The project eliminates the corridor typology, and spaces become shared volumes that allow for transition without compromising the function of a space.
