Work by Dalma Földesi M.Arch ’20 and Jung In Seo M.Arch ’20

Exhibition on view March 16, 2020 – April 3, 2020

Wednesday, March 18, 2020 / 6:00pm

Jung In Seo and Dalma Földesi are two recent graduates from MIT’s Master of Architecture program. Over the past few years, they collaborated on projects ranging from interactive installations, sculpture, furniture design, and large-scale structural analysis and fabrication. Their work celebrates the liminal space between the digital and the material: whether in pixels, grains, vectors, or fibers, they seek opportunities in the misalignments between techniques, resources, and desires.

Misalignments opens up opportunities that diverge from recent aims to optimize, mathematize, and discipline matter. Working with hybrid processes that relocate precision to the design of tools and actions, the objects in this exhibition result from direct interaction with clay. Here, material is the performer; its qualities emerge from a balancing act between geometric specification and physical behavior. We orchestrate moments of instability and anticipation in an open score that leads to different manifestations. This openness carries the promise of reintroducing authorship and promoting different understandings of labor in an otherwise increasingly automated process. It is a risky endeavor.

Refreshments will be served • Free and open to the public • No reservations necessary

The Jerome B. Wiesner Student Art Gallery, established as a gift from the MIT Class of 1983, honors the former president of MIT, Jerome Wiesner, for his support of the arts at the Institute. Located on the second floor of the Stratton Student Center, the gallery was designed to be a place for students to exhibit their artistic endeavors, both academic and co-curricular.

The gallery was fully renovated in fall 2016, thanks in part to the generosity of Harold (1944) and Arlene Schnitzer and the Council for the Arts at MIT, and now also serves as a central meeting space for MIT Student Arts Programming including the START Studio, Creative Arts Competition, Student Arts Advisory Board and Arts Scholars.

The gallery is located in the MIT Student Center and is open 24 hours a day.
