This paper explores the patterns of water use which developed during the early years of the Mughal Empire in India. Research on Mughal water systems invaria. bly draws attention to the refinement of garden pools, fountains, wells, and baths 1• These water features provided sensory delight; they expressed important cultural and political ideas; and they served various practical needs. Although the importance of garden water features has often been acclaimed, there have been no detailed investigations of their structure or development.
