Nikolaos Vlavianos

Architect and researcher Nikolaos Vlavianos is a recent graduate of MIT's Master of Science in Architecture Studies program (SMArchS) in collaboration with Design and Computation group, where he prototyped a rule-based generative design application through eye-tracking called Shape Grammars Reality (SGr). He holds a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University, Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation, and a Diploma in Architectural Engineering from the NTU of Athens.

Nikolaos has worked as a computational designer at MIT's Media Lab at the Tangible Media Group, in which he collaboratively developed a design-fabrication workflow for shape-changing inflatable textiles. He has been also working as a research assistant of the MIT's Design and Computation group for the implementation of Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), photogrammetry technologies in Architecture.

His work explores how agency is mediated by digital interfaces. His interdisciplinary work is divided between the development of tools to study design and making in interactive systems and experimental frameworks to study human behavior through Machine Learning.

Nikolaos MIT thesis, Shape Grammars Reality (SGr) is a mobile app that allows designers and non-experts to draft, brainstorm and design in real-time by using shape rules and eye-tracking. SGr is a novel computational method of designing through Shape Grammars' rules in the real world, by using computer vision algorithms detect, identify and manipulate shapes according to shape rules.

Among other academic merit awards, Nikolaos is an MIT Presidential Fellow, MIT Graduate Fellow, and a scholar of the American College of Greece, the IPEP and the Samourkas Foundation of New York.
