Theodora Vardouli

Theodora Vardouli is an architect, design researcher, and scholar broadly interested in the impact of computational media on discourse about design and making, in history and in the present. Currently a PhD Candidate at the MIT Department of Architecture, she is writing on transformations of design theory in the 1960s-1970s effected on the basis of computational (formal and mathematical) techniques, across sites in Europe and North America. In her ongoing doctoral dissertation (Major: Design and Computation, Minor: Science and Technology Studies), Theodora is interrogating the meanings and circulation of structural and relational mathematical ideas in early design research so as to provide an alternative historical and critical account of the emergence of user-centric and participatory perspectives in design. Parallel to her dissertation, Theodora researches expressions of abstraction and embodiment in past and present theories of design, both as member of the Computational Making Research Group at MIT, and organizer since 2011 of ReaDCG, the Design and Computation reading seminar. She has held a Visiting Assistant Professor position at Pratt where she taught a studio on formal systems, and has also taught at the MIT Department of Architecture, MIT Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the Boston Architectural College, and the National Technical University of Athens. She enjoys engaging in organizational, curatorial, and editorial activities, with forthcoming ones including a Special Issue on Computational Making in the Design Studies journal, co-edited with Prof. Terry Knight, and the organization of the Fall 2015 Design and Computation Lecture Series, themed Computational Mediations.
