Architecture Design Core Studio III — Fall 2013

This studio offers the opportunity to develop new modes of thinking about the contemporary laboratory. We will explore the culture of research, looking at the way scientists exchange ideas and communicate with each other. Research is a social as well as scientific activity, and building organization promotes different cultures of work, use and interaction. In taking up the demands of the contemporary research laboratory, our studio will speculate about the possibilities for architecture to play an instrumental role in the development of spaces for science and innovation. We will take the technical parameters as constraints but also sites of opportunity. By making systems a significant protagonist in the organizational logic of the architecture from the outset, we will take up the challenge posed by Reyner Banham to think design through systems. This studio will be a laboratory for the laboratory itself.
