Architectural Design Workshop — Volumetric Robotics

So much of the discussion surrounding digital design has focused on the surface. This research is intended to mine the lost knowledge of volume (typically stone construction) as a way to inform our contemporary methods of making with these complexities and potentials. Robotics is inherently volumetric and methodological. This workshop will utilize robotics as a platform for advancing this knowledge in relation to volumetric materials—Autoclave Aerate Concrete, Stone, Foam, etc. Students will research, propose, and execute translations of ancient knowledge into robotic processes. This body of work involves, tool creation, process generation, material investigation, and assembly integration. This focused workshop will culminate in a series of constructed artifacts contributing gained knowledge via publication and exhibition.
