Design Workshop for a Sustainable Future — From Waste to Brick to House: Low-Cost Construction Materials in India

4.472 ⎯ undergraduate subject
4.473 ⎯ graduate subject

Requires permission of instructor

This research and design workshop will explore low cost materials for resilient housing construction in India. This interdisciplinary workshop cuts across the faculties of material science, structural engineering, architecture, and business management. By considering environmental, economic, and social impacts, students will explore alternative materials for masonry construction in India.

Students will understand the landscape of construction materials and housing models in developing contexts and will learn tools to evaluate the environmental and economic performance of various building unit types. We will explore how this impact changes as a function of alternate materials in bricks, geographic context and manufacturing methods. Students will develop alternative design strategies for housing based on their material investigations and local conditions.

The workshop offers a two-week research trip to India prior to the beginning of the semester to engage local stakeholders and to gain important local knowledge and context. Travel costs will be supported by the Tata Center for Technology and Design.
