Special Subject: Art, Culture and Technology — Installation: Video Installation: Art, Architecture, and Related Media

Video installation is a contemporary and expanding art genre that intersects with the world of architecture, engineering, programing/new media, public art, and performance practices. In this intermediate to advanced Art, Culture and Technology course, students are encouraged to expand the current themes and methods within their art or research practices by experimenting with various video installation strategies, such as: video sculpture; site-specific architectural projections; multi-channel projection environments; mixing moving image content with live performance, wearable sculpture, live feeds, physical computing, or other elements that may interest the student. Independent research and transdisciplinary projects are encouraged and welcome.

Weekly classes will shift between screening and reading discussions, (technical demonstrations),* and critiques of students’ projects. To show mastery of the course's content, students are required to create a self-designed final project that demonstrates their understanding and ability to synthesize their ideas, moving image content, physical form, and viewer positioning. *

*IN THE EVENT OF REMOTE OR HYBRID LEARNING, this class would cover the same art and conceptual topics, but would shift away from equipment demonstrations and the production of physical installations on campus, to planning and creating “proposal ready” video mock-ups or digital visualizations of ideas.

Students will have the OPTION to create physical installation/sculptural projects (scale models or actual size), and present their projects remotely via video-conferencing, as video documentation, or, if in the the Boston/Cambridge area, create an outdoor, socially-distant viewing event.

PREREQUISITES: This class is open to all undergraduate and graduate students who have the technical skills to create moving image content in any format, including: video, film, animation, computer-generated imagery, etc. A working knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro and Photoshop is highly recommended. All interests and content styles are welcome.

 NOTE: If the number of students interested in the class is larger than the capacity, portfolio reviews may be requested by the instructor to grant enrollment into the course.
