Special Subject: History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture and Art — Art/Science Thing

Permission of instructor

Art and Science are pursuits that look at each other across a divide in how knowledge is produced, that was itself created in the crucible of modernity. This course investigates the long history of “the Art/Science thing,” looking at the production of “fine” arts and the “science” of aesthetics, the division of “the liberal arts,” the creation of the two culture debate in the 20th century, and the emergence of new hybrid domains such as “bio-art” in the 21st. Taught by an art historian, this graduate level seminar welcomes and solicits participation from students of the sciences, history, art, and architecture.
