Urban Design Studio: The Reconstruction of Central Providence, RI

Providence, Rhode Island was once a thriving and beautiful Capitol city. After World War II, however, the exodus of industry and people combined with the invasion of freeways to decimate the central city. Some revival has been accomplished, and the city possesses several important institutions, but a vast area remains undeveloped. The recent removal of an elevated cross-town freeway offers the opportunity to redevelop the central city. The studio will consist of an urban plan, a neighborhood development plan, and a building design. The intent of the studio is to concretely explore the interface between architecture and urban design.
