Emergent Materials

4.476 — undergraduate subject
4.477 — graduate subject

This research-inspired class will explore novel functions and applications of various kinds of foams (cellular solids) and fibers in architecture. Producing customized samples and understanding the properties of ceramic and polymer foams, synthetic and natural fibers will be the basis for open-ended, hands-on investigations. Much of the work will be done in the architecture fablab and the facilities of the International Design Center in N52. A portion of our class will be coordinated with the Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering class, 3.042 Materials Project Laboratory. All materials will be provided.
