Special Subject: History, Theory & Criticism of Architecture & Art — Territories

Prerequisites:
Permission of instructor

This seminar probes how the notion of territory has a deep history.  We will examine a series of questions about territory that coalesce around issues including the conceptual history of territory, the politicization of notions of territory, its contestation, its representation, how terrain has been analyzed, the legal history of territory as property, and relationship between territory and architecture.  In particular, we will consider different ideas about the relationship between place and power, and how that matrix intimately is bound to thoughts about territory.  Students are expected to make several presentations and to write a final paper.
