Building Technology Welcomes New Faculty Holly Samuelson and Mariana Popescu

We are delighted to welcome Mariana Popescu and Holly Samuelson to the Department of Architecture’s Building Technology Program. Popescu joins as an assistant professor with a shared appointment in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing. A computational architect and structural designer, her work bridges architecture, engineering, and digital fabrication, with a focus on sustainable design and innovative material use. She earned her doctorate at ETH Zurich and was named to MIT Technology Review’s global “35 Innovators Under 35” list in 2019.

Samuelson joins as an associate professor, bringing expertise in architectural technology and building simulation. Her teaching and research investigate how building design impacts human and environmental health, with projects addressing greenhouse gas emissions, heat vulnerability, and indoor environmental quality in the context of a changing electricity grid. A widely published scholar and recognized voice in the media, she earned her doctor of design from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design.
