In memoriam: Donlyn Lyndon (1936–2026)

The MIT Department of Architecture mourns the passing of Donald Lyndon, FAIA, who served as the Head of the Department of Architecture from 1967 to 1975 and later chaired the MIT Committee on the Visual Arts from 1976 to 1978.

Known for his intense yet gentle demeanor, Lyndon left an indelible imprint on the department. He challenged modern architecture's then prevalent commitment to function and abstraction. Aiming for a more human-oriented approach, he inspired an entire generation of architects to design with their social and environmental contexts rather than to impose forms upon them.

The College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley, where Lyndon was Professor Emeritus of Architecture, has published an obituary highlighting his work and the history of his time at UC Berkeley.
