Nicholas de Monchaux joins the Santa Fe Institute as an external professor

Nicholas de Monchaux, Head of Architecture and a professor in the Departments of Architecture and Urban Studies and Planning in the MIT School of Architecture and Planning has joined the Santa Fe Institute as an External Professor. The appointment is ongoing and renewable.

“My appointment benefits our students and faculty by helping to create scholarly and research connections at the forefront of current thinking on complex systems,” says de Monchaux. “This research is particularly relevant to urban studies, resilience, and infrastructure questions studied in our School.”

The Santa Fe Institute is a non-profit research center whose faculty study complex adaptive systems across a variety of scientific disciplines. Appointments for external professorships are by nomination and based on high regard for their work or through former collaborations. De Monchaux’s current research focus is on designing tools for resilience and urban transformation. 

“I have and will continue to plug in colleagues and students to this network,” says de Monchaux.

De Monchaux, the Weber-Shaughness Professor, joined MIT in 2020. He is the co-founder of the MIT Local Code Labwhich was awarded the Leventhal City Prize in 2022 for “Drawing Together,” a social and ecological resilience project in New York City. The project is a collaboration between MIT faculty, researchers, students and Green City Force, a non-profit organization in New York City that trains young people for careers with a sustainability focus.
