Mark Jarzombek named a 2026 Fellow of the Society of Architectural Historians
Mark Jarzombek, Professor of the History and Theory of Architecture, has been named a 2026 Fellow of the Society of Architectural Historians — the organization’s highest honor, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to architectural history through scholarship, teaching, service, and stewardship of the built environment.
An architectural historian, educator, and designer, Jarzombek has built a body of work that spans global history, contemporary criticism, and the theoretical foundations of the discipline. His scholarship engages topics ranging from early modernism and urban destruction to philosophy and the global circulation of ideas.
At MIT, he has played a central role in shaping the study of architecture and its history. He served as Director of the History, Theory, and Criticism program, Associate Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, and Interim Dean, and has mentored more than 50 PhD students in the U.S. and abroad.
Jarzombek is also known for expanding access to architectural education. Through edX, he launched one of the first massive open online courses on architectural history, reaching more than 100,000 learners worldwide, and co-founded the Global Architecture History Teaching Collaborative to support new approaches to teaching the field.
This recognition places him among a small group of scholars whose work has helped shape architectural history as a discipline and profession. The Society of Architectural Historians has named fewer than 100 Fellows since the program began in 1999.
SAH will formally recognize the Fellows at its annual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the 79th Annual International Conference in Mexico City. Learn more about SAH Fellows Program here: https://sah.org/2026/03/09/society-of-architectural-historians-names-2026-fellows-of-sah/.
