Yutong Ma

Yutong Ma (Jamila) is a PhD student in the History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture Program and the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at MIT. She is broadly interested in cultural exchanges between China and the Islamic world across history. Her current research examines the formation of mosque architecture and the development of Huihui (Chinese Muslim) identities in eastern China during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368–1911), approaching these processes through the lenses of social and cultural history.

Yutong earned a Master of Science in Architectural Studies and a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to joining MIT, she worked for ArchiDogs, an architecture media firm based in Hangzhou, China, where she interviewed architects from around the world and produced articles on contemporary architectural practice.
