Jeffrey (Jong hwa) Na

PhD Student

Jeffrey Na is a PhD Student in Building Technology at MIT, where he studies the environmental and human health impacts of building design. Within the Livable Spaces Lab, his research leverages computational methods to assess the thermal resilience of the existing building stock under climate extremes.

His research interests include system retrofits, building electrification, and the time value of carbon. He has focused on existing buildings, exploring both decarbonization pathways and indoor air quality improvement, supported by the National Academy of Sciences and the U.S. General Services Administration.

He holds an M.S. in Building Performance and Diagnostics from Carnegie Mellon University and a B.Arch. from Kookmin University in Seoul. Before joining MIT, he was one of the founding members of the Climate Action Studio at Gensler, where he integrated design analytics into sustainability consulting projects. He also worked on the development of large-scale benchmarking tools for residential and commercial buildings to help utilities identify electrification barriers and optimize energy programs that lower energy burdens.
