Terry Knight

Terry Knight is William and Emma Rogers Professor of Design and Computation in the Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She conducts research and teaches in the area of computational design, with an emphasis on the theory and application of shape grammars. Her book, Transformations in Design, is a well-known introduction to the field of shape grammars, and she has published extensively on shape grammar-related topics in design research journals. Her recent research is in the new area of Computational Making, where she is exploring the incorporation of material, sensory, and improvisational, and temporal aspects of making things into grammars. 

She currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Mathematics and the Arts, Design Science, Design Studies, and ArchiDoct. She is co-editor of the Routledge book series, Design, Technology and Society. She holds a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and an MA and PhD in Architecture from the University of California, Los Angeles.
