Carlos Sandoval Olascoaga

Carlos Sandoval Olascoaga is Postdoctoral Associate and Lecturer at MIT with a joint appointment between the Department of Architecture and the Schwarzman College of Computing. His research enables designers to critically leverage computing to increase community participation, diversity, and justice in architecture and in the development of design technologies. He combines urban data, public service, computing, and design to provide formal methods that allow the broadest set of community actors to shape their own environments holistically with the support of computational intelligence.

His work has provided a set of frameworks for community collaboration in architecture and design, with graphically-enabled methods for data analysis and spatial modeling for spatial design, as well as computational tools that integrate CAD, GIS, and co-design. His current book project uncovers the computational and political history of digital spatial data and tools for geo-computing that provides a critical framework for the future of design and spatial analysis tools. Carlos received his MS and PhD in Design and Computation from MIT, a Masters of Architecture from UC Berkeley, and a Bachelors of Architecture from UNAM in Mexico.
